  is j. k. rowling a witch?

  the reason i ask is this, a 'nice' couple across the road are born again christian fundamentalists.

  their little boy was playing with a sword and his mum told me he had been watching 'narnia' (based on the lion the witch and the wardrobe).

  Nope, none at all. When the movies first came out I just thought they were for kids. There's been a few on TV, I've seen bits and pieces of the first one, but just never had the time to sit down and watch the whole thing.

  As kids we used to pretend we had magic wands and wave them around and say things like abrakadabra (sp?) etc. (Raised a JW)

  I was just relating an explanation I had overheard. I was not part of the conversation and like I said, not having seen either movie (I know less about Narnia than HP) I could not comment on the validity of the statement to the person making it.

  I overheard a conversation at work when Narnia was just coming out at the theater. One of the guys asked a woman there (BAC) why she would let her children watch Narnia and not HP. She said it was because HP teaches you how to cast spells.

  I haven't watched either, so I can't comment if this is true or not.

  the lifestyle of a woman as one of jehovah's witnesses is certainly not an easy job.

  it is a well known fact that most of the work that takes place within the watchtower society contributing to its success, is due to the backbone of the watchtower which can be described as the women in the congregation.

  But, I can't help but wonder about those who took it all in and actually tried to live up to an impossible standard.

  I can tell you about all those who did take it to heart: they are physically sick, worn down, depressed, chronically anxious, hopeless and helpless. It is any wonder there are so many JW women on all kinds of medication? My mom takes about 100 pills a day for different ailments. Sad.

  Soledad - this is just like my mother. My mother is suffering from several ailments - and anxiety disorders. She is physically not well and is only in her late 50's. She had sometimes 6 kids to look after (step family) and my father had his own business that she helped out with and did the books. She spent so much time on "keeping up apperances" when we were kids, pioneering in April/May, attending all the assemblies (and helping out both sets of grandparents), meetings, service, she is just worn out now. She told me she wished she had of done things differently when we were kids, but there's no turning back the clock. BB

  How did you cope?

  when you found out that this religion probably wasn't the one true religion like you had believed probably for a large portion of your life, or maybe even all of it, how did you react?

  my whole life belongs to the society.

  all my friends are witnesses, my family are witnesses, even my job is dedicated to the society.

  For me it was a gradual thing. Somethings did not feel right to me, and I gradually became inactive before I knew what things were wrong within the "org". It took me awhile to come to grips with my feelings, and my marriage did suffer at the time, thankfully it is stronger now. I started to make "wordly" friends and to distance myself from those at the hall. You say your job is dedicated to the society. What exactly do you mean by this? Can you find another job to help distance yourself? I still don't understand the purpose of life or the real meaning of the bible. I tried reading "The Purpose Driven Life" and couldn't finish it, it gave me more questions than answers. If and when God wants me to know these things He'll make sure I know. It's not easy having to leave those you think are friends behind, to face the possiblity of losing family members. But it may happen and we all deal with it the best way we know how. One thing that is for sure, you will find support here. BB

  How did your parents punish you?????(Fluff)

  now i know the topic may be thought of as abuse scenario, however it is not.....(i am sick of hearing about abuse).

  i threw a party at my house(parents came home early)....anyway, as a punishment i was to sand and stain shingles for the house.

  this was a huge job it took me 2 weeks to get it all done.

  My mom was a hit first/ask questions later type. Never any "alternate" forms of punishment with her.

  My brother and sis in law usually make the kids write an essay on what they did wrong, why it was wrong and why they won't do it again. My neice helped a friend to "run away" to her fathers place (out of town, parents divorced). When it came time to do speeches at school, my neice had to write her speech on runaways. I thought that was an excellent idea.

  I posted this link awhile back, there was a thread about the Government and Shunning. I came across it afew years ago while doing a search on disfellowshipping. I never expected to find that the Canadian Government had looked into this.

  If 2 people of the opposite sex are alone at night, sex has occurred and they can be disfellowshipped; if it happens during the day..........

  Yeah -- when things are all say and done I am going to post some letters I got from the society on this one. Cause my questions was what if the people invovled were know night workers and therefore would only been seen in the house for long period of times during the day

  When your door bell rings, do you still think it might be the elders?

  i live in an apartment building, and i just heard the door bells ringing here and there, which automatically made me think that it could be the jw's.... when someone is at the door here, knocking or ringing, i'm always fearful that it will be them....

  Yep!

  I'm especially careful on Saturday mornings. I make sure the blind on the door is pulled so they can't see in.

  ok i know it was not just upstate new york that had this problem.

  of all the jw weddings i went to, i can think of 3 that were catered.

  all the rest, the congregation members paid for.

  Is the point of going to the wedding the meal you get while there? I could really care less about that. My husbands family finds out how much the meal is costing per person and gives their monetary gift accordingly. If it costs the couple $150.00/plate they give $300 cash wedding gift, if it costs $20/plate they give $40.00. I find this really disgusting. minimus - JW Italian weddings are no different than wordly JW weddings (at least the ones I've been to).

  This didn't happen all that often at any of the JW weddings I went to. The odd time it happened it wasn't much of a big deal to me. Most JW's that get married are very young and can't afford too much, and with the type of work the parents do they don't have much money either.

  One wedding we attended that was "pot luck" there was hardly any food at all. The poor sister that was taking care of the food said that hardly anybody that was supposed to bring a dish did. She was really upset. She ended up running to the grocery store and bought frozen lasaganas and heated them up in the halls kitchen, then went to Tim Hortons for tim bits for the dessert.

  At baby or wedding showers they were almost always pot luck (this at JW and non JW showers I've been to.
